All peripheral devices are hardware. Some devices may be inserted inside the computer system unit (e.g. a modem, network adapter, multimedia card). To connect these devices to the computer, the computer’s main electronic board (motherboard) must have free slots (connectors, or slots) for connecting the devices. For interaction between peripherals requires the exchange of information between the main memory and external devices. This exchange is called input-output. But this exchange does not happen directly: there are two intermediate links between any external device and the RAM in the computer.
1) For each external device, the computer has a controlling electronic circuit. This circuitry is called a controller or adapter. Some controllers (such as a disk controller) can control several devices at once.
2) All controllers and adapters communicate with the microprocessor and RAM via a system data highway, usually called the system bus.
