Silvering of paper according to Duval:
A tin salt (tin chloride) is dissolved in water acidified with a small amount of hydrochloric acid. A clean zinc plate is inserted into this solution and left until all the tin has settled as a fine powder. This powder is obtained the thinner the thinner the solution of the tin salt. The resulting precipitate is first washed in water, then in diluted acetic acid and finally dried. When used, the metal powder is grinded with glue water and applied to paper.
Bronzing paper:
Sheets of paper are coated with liquid carpenter’s glue or gum arabic and then sprinkled evenly (through a sieve) with bronzing powder. To make the bronzing glossy, the powder is rubbed with a polished stone when the paper has dried.
